  3. Brassica oleracea with its varieties
  4. broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and brussels
  5. sprouts. In 1990 US experiments in
  6. cross-polinating the wild cabbage Brassica
  7. campestris with related varieties of
  8. cultivated cabbage, turnip, and swede,
  9. produced a new plant having a life cycle of
  10. only five weeks. It is now being used in US
  11. schools to enable pupils to carry out
  12. plant-breeding experiments, which can produce
  13. ten generations in one year.
